[I][ORACLE] I need a new tune. [message #297364] Di, 11 Juli 2006 05:17

My local am dram is putting on a performance of Shennanigan's Wake. An
Irish themed comedy with songs in it. The cast and crew are enjoying the
rehearsals and having a hard time keeping a straight face even during read
throughs, so it looks like it will be well received.
However, we have one small problem. Most of the songs (parodies
usually) are upbeat and cheerful. Then we get to the last act, things are
reaching a climax, and we suddenly get Galway Bay. The words are changed to
fit the plot so we want to keep them, but the tune is slow and frankly dull
at a period when things should be ramping up for the big finish. Does
anybody know of a more upbeat tune that we could substitute while retaining
these words?
(Googling "Galway Bay" will provide many examples of the original for those
that wish.)

TIA

Anthony

Rather than changing the tune, you could always try changing the style
that it's sung in.. having just had a play about on my guitar, "Galway
Bay" sounds totally different if sung with a calypso beat..

Good point. Baring any further suggestions (still welcomed), I will look
into this. It will be more difficult though as we usually use pre-recorded
music due to the lack of musicians in our group.

I wasn't familiar with the work - this one?

If you ever go across the sea to Ireland
Then maybe at the closing of your day
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay

I don't know the proper tune either, but you could surprise the
audience by using the verse part of "Battle Hymn of the Republic".
Chorus optional.

Oh, hullo.
http://www.contemplator.com/ireland/galway.html :
"There are two songs named Galway Bay. This is the older version,
written by Francis A. Fahy (born in 1850). The air is My Irish Molly,
O."

"It's far away I am today
>From scenes I roamed a boy
And long ago the hour, I know
I first saw Illinois
But Time not Tide, not waters wide,
Can wean my heart away
For ever true it flies to you
My own dear Galway Bay."

_The Archers_ theme perhaps, "Barwick Green"?

"Galway Bay - Written by Arthur Colahan, in memory of one of his
brothers who drowned in the Bay. It is a song about the grief of exile.
1947"

- 'ere, what music do you have rights to perform?

Nope, the other one.

Dat's der bunny. The lyrics have already been changed by the writer to
something more ... Oggish. Which is why we want to keep them. But the tune,
which Ive not actually listened to myself, is apparently too slow and dull,
hence the need to add some sparkle. I know, having changed the words we now
want to change the tune. It seems mad but then that's what we're like.

Whatever we can get. Mostly this has not been a problem. There are people in
the group with the right contacts for this.

Oh my. How about the Can-Can then?

If you ever wander Hubwards up to Lancre,
There are diverse local fauna, large and small,
And it's no surprise if after some you hanker,
But there's one that can't be buggered, not at all...

....you'd have to change the words a little bit, to fit. (So would I.)

You may bring a feathered stick with which to tickle,
Or a stepladder, 'cos some climb trees and all,
But the Hedgehog's fussy and has lots of prickles,
If you turn it off, it curls into a ball (Ouch!)

So if for a spiny partner you are pining,
Don't bring milk, but cat food, when you come to call,
But forget if if you're stood up after dining,
For the Hedgehog can't be buggered, not at all.

- I'm very pleased to say that this is not in memory of anyone who died
tragically in the course of any activity whatsoever.

Other stray thought... perhaps "Galway Bay"is included to get
dissatisfied Irishmen in the audience crying into their Guiness instead
of charging the stage... mind you, I haven't seen the lyrics. If you
change the tune...

And... the proper lyrics to "Galway Bay" don't seem to present a
memorial to a tragically lost brother... or to life in 1947, I'd prefer
to think... and don't comment on the possible dangers of sea bathing.
You'd think... oh, well. Perhaps they've put signs up. Hey, I spelled
that "sings" until I corrected it.
